Single decal over rough combat finish helmet. Decal has "grown" into the finish and has stayed very well, save scraping and wear, but no flaking. Maker is SE Sachsische Emaillier u.Stanzwerke. Size is 60 shell with 53 liner, Extra Small and accounts for only 10% of all the helmets made including M-35 through M-42 , inclusive . There was no smaller size made.
The finish is as should be with aluminum oxide mixed in paint to dull the finish. Scrapes and wear are consistent with combat usage, and all old exposed metal has a deep rich brown finish and not the reddish rust of recently acid treated work. The inner skirt retains it's easy to read stampings and low production number of 364. The chinstrap is original along with it's wartime grey original finish buckle. It has been neatly cut in the center long ago, never having been unbuckled since. It has some brown spots on the liner which suggest injury. The acceptance stamp is still visible at the dome, albeit worn. The only thing missing from this helmet is the string, lost to time.
Due to the small size ,perhaps making it a curiosity and the fact the chinstrap was cut and the liner NOT totally soaked through and rotted, suggests strongly that this helmet was "taken" at or near the moment of the original wearer's no longer" needing it". Many stories abounded at where a helmet was obtained and from whom. This example shows clearly in all respects, some helmet souvenirs were indeed acquired that way. A poignant commentary of the Second world war which just recently appeared as a "walk-in" at a recent gun show. Never messed with, never cleaned in any way never restored or altered. You will not see another anytime soon. A very unique helmet which would display exceedingly well.
